DO YOU ENJOY HELPING PEOPLE? Do you have an energetic and charismatic personality? Consider life coaching as a suitable vocation or avocation for you.

I am sure many of you have already received some form of help from a life coach. Your coach worked one-on-one with you either in person or by phone. He must have helped you discover for yourself what is most important in your life. He must have helped you perform at your optimum level. He must have helped you achieve what you most desire. So, you see a life coach is neither a therapist nor a consultant. He is a helping person.

What Is Life Coaching?

Life coaching has its roots in executive coaching. It draws techniques from leadership training and management consulting. Its concepts are derived from sociology, psychology, mentoring, career, and other types of counseling. Its services include mentoring, behavior modification, behavior modeling, values assessment, goal-setting, and other techniques.

Unlike psychotherapy, life coaching focuses on changing the helpee’s present and future behavior. It does not dwell in examining and diagnosing the past. It does not delve into diagnosing mental illness or dysfunction. A life coach serves as a sounding board and a motivator. He listens and gives honest feedback to his helpee.

How to Become a Life Coach

If you want to become a life coach, decide first on a specialty for your practice. Among the areas you can choose are time management, career, business, finance, health, relationships, or a variety of other areas. Then, pursue further training in your chosen field.

Attend a life coaching seminar to get an overview of life coaching in general. Here, you will see how coaches interact with people in the crowd. Approach one of the speakers, and ask how you can best break into this field. This seminar should give you an idea if you really want to become a life coach.

Visit to give you an idea about what kind of courses are offered in a coach training school. No matter what school you get your training from, be sure you pursue a program of instruction that results in accreditation. Without credentials, it will be difficult to position yourself as reliable and trusted helper.

Now that you know the basics of becoming a life coach, invest more time researching on this topic further.
